Cancellations and postponements due to construction
There has been a delay in finishing the concrete work on the north entrance and on the steps leading up from the back of the rectory. This week our Building Committee met with the contractor. They were assured that the pouring of the concrete will begin and that the crew will be on the job until the work is finished.
We've had to make the following decisions due to the construction:
Cancel the Neighborhood Meals on August 20 and August 27: We have up to 250 guests and volunteers for our meals and need to ensure that we can safely evacuate in the case of an emergency. Until the north door is open it is best that we cancel the meal.
Postpone Sunday 8/21 Parish Picnic: The Picnic Committee visited this week and determined that it would be very difficult to hold the picnic without cleared space outside for cooking and eating and without easy access to the hall. Look for news here about a rescheduled date for the picnic.
Move the School Supply distribution to the school building for Monday, 8/22: With at least 800 families expected, we will have them enter the school door on W. 65 Street, pick up supplies for their children at tables set along the length of the hallway and exit through the school's parking lot door. If you'd like to volunteer anytime on Monday 8/22 to help us to prepare this alternative distribution site or to volunteer for the distribution itself starting at 5:30 p.m., please call Eileen Kelly at the office (216) 651-0550 ext. 101.
Cancel the Latina Project/Domestic Violence Center's support group Monday, August 22: This group of 50 women and children meet every Monday for supper, classes for women and playgroups for their children.
Cancel AA Meetings: Until access through the north door is complete, all meetings are cancelled. Call United Way’s First Call For Help by dialing 211 on any phone to find a meeting near you.
In the meantime, we've made the following adjustments to create better access to the hall.
· Installed a handrail in the lift stairwell so that it is easier to walk up and down between the rails. The lift needs a new drive box/motor and it has been ordered. This repair will cost about $6000 which was an unexpected expense. We are waiting to hear when the part will be available.
· Opened access to the hall from the south tower door. This stairwell lands in the hall vestibule and has been closed for many years. It is now safe and useable.
